Peter Senge, Author and Senior Lecturer; Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Peter Senge

Peter M. Senge is a senior lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the author of The Necessary Revolution: How Individuals and Organizations Are Working Together to Create a Sustainable World, released in 2008. He is also founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL), a global community of corporations, researchers, and consultants dedicated to the "interdependent development of people and their institutions." He is also the author of the widely acclaimed management organization book,The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of The Learning Organization.

Brimming with inspiring stories from individuals and organizations tackling social and environmental problems around the globe, The Necessary Revolution reveals how ordinary people at every level are transforming their businesses and communities. By working collaboratively across boundaries, they are exploring and putting into place unprecedented solutions that move beyond just being “less bad” to creating pathways that will enable us to flourish in an increasingly interdependent world. Dr. Senge's latest work contains a wealth of strategies that individuals and organizations can use — specific tools and ways of thinking — to help us build the confidence and competence to respond effectively to the greatest challenge of our time. It is an essential guidebook for all of us who recognize the need to act and work together—now—to create a sustainable world, both for ourselves and for the generations to follow.

Dr. Senge has lectured extensively throughout the world, translating the abstract ideas of systems theory into tools for better understanding of economic and organizational change. His areas of special interest focus on decentralizing the role of leadership in organizations so as to enhance the capacity of all people to work productively toward common goals. Dr. Senge's work articulates a cornerstone position of human values in the workplace; namely, that vision, purpose, reflectiveness, and systems thinking are essential if organizations are to realize their potentials. He has worked with leaders in business, education, health care and government.

Dr. Senge has been recognized highly for his work. The Journal of Business Strategy named him as one of the 24 people who had the greatest influence on business strategy over the last 100 years. The Financial Times considers him as one of the world's “top management gurus” with Business Week rating him as one of the top ten Management Gurus. Dr. Senge was recently selected as of the top 20 most influential business thinkers by the Wall Street Journal.

Peter Senge received a B.S. in engineering from Stanford University, an M.S. in social systems modeling and Ph.D. in management from MIT. He lives with his wife and their two children in central Massachusetts.
