John Gabriel, Project Executive, Global Supply Chain; IBM Corp.

John Gabriel is corporate manager of IBM's Supply Chain Responsibility programs. Appointed to this position in January 2004, he oversees a global team of procurement professionals for Supply Chain Social Responsibility and Responsible Minerals (3TG and Cobalt). Under Mr. Gabriel's leadership these programs have been deployed to 13,000 suppliers in over 90 countries. He plays a lead role in dialog with clients, nongovernmental organizations, and industry leaders. IBM is a sector leader with its extensive audit program (using RBA Validated Audits) and supplier improvement plan process. His responsibilities also include the Supply Chain section of IBM's annual Corporate Responsibility Report. In 2019 he joined IBM's Global Business Services team as a key participant in the Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN).

 

John is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) – previously known as the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) – which IBM co-founded in 2004. RBA is a 160+ member global organization focused on a common supply chain code of conduct and implementation tools for the electronics sector. Under his term as Chair, RBA developed and deployed its Validated Audit Process, Auditor Certification program, Learning and Capability Building supply chain training, and formed the Responsible Minerals Initiative, including its Smelter validation process and Due Diligence survey.

 

John managed IBM's Mechanical Commodity Council, responsible for the global sourcing of sheet metal, plastics, and decorative coatings. He developed the first desktop personal computer using 100% recycled engineering-grade plastics for all its main structural elements; and implemented application of environmentally friendly decorative powder paint coatings for IBM's hardware lines.

 

John Gabriel holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Union College (Schenectady, NY) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA). He is actively involved in documenting the evolution of railroads in the Northeastern United States and is President of the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society.
